Members of the Section of State and Local
Government Law of the American Bar Association number over
5,500 and include municipal, county, and state attorneys, federal
lawyers and administrators, judges, law professors, bond counsel,
and private practitioners working with state and local
government.
Section members are encouraged to join one of the substantive
committees and task forces. Committees are the backbone of the
Section and allow members to enhance their expertise and
collaborate with lawyers sharing similar interests. Committees
often surface ideas for Section publications and programs.
The Section has created a Task Force on Emergency Management and
Homeland Security that helps state and local lawyers prepare for
and respond to legal issues arising from natural and non-natural
disaster events in their "client jurisdictions."
At ABA Annual Meetings, the Section offers programs focusing on
topics like municipal finance, diversity issues, election law, land
use, and public education - a highlight at each Meeting is a review
of recent developments in land use law. The Section sponsors
educational programs throughout the year, many in conjunction with
its fall and spring Council meetings. Members receive The Urban
Lawyer, the national quarterly on state and local government
law, and the newsletter, State and Local Law News.
Section members may use the website to sign up for Section
committees, review the program calendar, purchase Section
publications, and join any of the five online discussion groups on
eminent domain, land use planning and zoning, public finance,
ethics, and state and local government. For more information about
member benefits and how to join the Section of State and Local
Government Law of the American Bar Association, please visit http://www.abanet.org/members/join/currentmembers.html.
