The only professional group in the country bringing together
plaintiff's lawyers, defense lawyers and insurance and
corporate counsel, the Tort
and Insurance Practice Section (TIPS) is one of the most
wide-ranging sections in the ABA. TIPS has 36 general committees
that focus on substantive and procedural matters in areas including
aviation and space law, fidelity and surety law, medical
malpractice, transportation law and others. Members can also
acquire skills in practice methods in a number of committees
ranging from appellate advocacy to trial techniques to alternate
dispute resolution.
TIPS provides its more than 24,000 members with three quarterly
publications. The Brief, the section's magazine, reports
on new issues and trends, and includes a "Practice TIPS"
section offering practical articles by legal experts on practice
methods. Tort and Insurance Law Journal contains in-depth
articles about new legal developments. It is the most widely
recognized law review in the field.
A third quarterly publication, TortSource, the
section's newsletter, highlights current tort and insurance
issues and includes technology updates, practice tips, young lawyer
information and a host of unique columns. TIPS also publishes books
and videotape programs on a wide range of topics. More than 80
in-depth continuing legal education programs are conducted by TIPS
throughout the year. National and regional programs cover topics
such as insurance insolvency, environmental torts, employment
discrimination, managed care issues and automobile law.
The Tort and Insurance Practice Section has been at the
forefront of many policy issues considered by the ABA, including
health care reform, product liability, no-fault insurance and
aircraft accident liability. The section is also involved in a
number of public service projects, including a peer mediation
program in high schools across the nation and a domestic violence
safety program in corporate America. For more information about
